Locals are to blame for littering: Masidi

Kota Kinabalu: More tourists can be expected to visit Sabah if locals clean up their act and make it attractive for them.

"A cleaner environment will draw tourists," said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun, pointing out that sadly people in the State don't show much concern for cleanliness.

"Kota Kinabalu would be a much cleaner city if Sabahans change their attitudes and become more conscious about cleanliness," Masidi said at the launching of the 4th Malaysia Association of Hotels (MAH) Sabah Chapter Environment Week held at 1st Beach in Tanjung Aru, here, Saturday.

He said the problem was Sabahans liked to litter and that it was an attitude that needs to be changed.

Masidi also dismissed claims made by certain quarters that it's the illegal immigrants in the State that are to blame for littering the city.

"Don't blame the illegal immigrants. According to statistics, around 70 per cent of the rubbish in our streets are discarded from moving vehicles. The illegal immigrants don't own vehicles, so it must be us," he said.

Masidi commended MAH Sabah for the concern they show for the environment and for organising such events that promote a positive awareness among the public.

"I hope with more activities such as the environment week, MAH would continue to play a role in creating awareness for the people of Sabah.

The highlight of the day's event was a rafting competition, which a total of 11 teams from various hotels took part. The rafts were made from recyclable mineral water bottles and other materials.

Masidi also dwelled on the public's wide use of plastic bags.

He said plastic bags, which often end up on the streets and along shores and beaches, are very hazardous to the environment.

According to Masidi, it can take up to 500 years for a plastic bag to degrade and get absorbed back to the earth.

He called on the public to try and lessen the use of plastic bags, pointing out that one way of achieving this would be to bring their own recyclable bag when shopping for groceries.

He also said it would be better for the environment if grocers and supermarkets could use paper bags instead of plastic.

Meanwhile, MAH Sabah Chapter Deputy Chairman, Thomas More Willie, said the association has been actively supporting environmental conservation in Sabah through the practice of "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle".

Thomas, who is also General Manager of Beverly Hotel, said whatever the association committee does, its objectives would always be for the betterment of the environment.

On June 21, MAH Sabah Chapter would be gathering at the Atkinson Clock Tower (near the Kota Kinabalu Police Station) to beautify the area.

During the environmental week, several hotels would be carrying out their own "Next to You" programmes, which involve addressing environmental or safety issues in locations next to the respective hotels.

It can't be denied that some of the locals are littering and this attitude shows to tourist our true colours. But then the PATI's also contribute to all these littering as what we can see around the squatters home at Pulau Gaya. A few years ago, it was exposed in one of our local daily paper regarding loitering around Pulau Gaya's squatters. All the rubbish thrown there then travels and conquered our beaches like Tg Aru Beach, etc etc. What a pity!

As a recent visitor (tourist) to Sabah, I must say, I was disappointed at the large amounts of litter and pollution we saw.

You have such beautiful countryside, but it is a shame to see it ruined by litter.

We visited some Kampungs with piles and piles of rubbish between and under houses, just left to wash into the waterways, or get spread further by dogs and cats who wander free. We saw people throw rubbish out of house windows, car windows... all into the street or the waterways.
Rubbish in the waterways eventually flows to the ocean. This rubbish is killing your local fish life!!

There needs to be more bins provided on the streets for people to place litter into. There also needs to be more regular rubbish collection services to take away peoples rubbish.

As Sabah grows its population, this problem will only get worse unless something is done to stop it now!

Shops need to use less plastic bags. People need to use re-useable shopping bags instead.

When I visit Sabah next year, I hope to see less rubbish and more beautiful scenery.

I must agree with you Aussie. There are places along the highway or kampung roads littered with rubbish thrown by the local drivers. Although its hard to accept the fact but then its what happened nowadays and one of the polluted stream is just opposite the Geology Department near QEH as referred by Lady Everina.
